I guess every mum and dad will be familiar with the joys of sterilising feeding equipment. Whether you steam or cold water it is a necessary step in safely feeding your baby and I have, I confess, always been a steamer, mainly because I always disliked the bleachy smell left by sterilising fluids. We were recently asked to try a new range of sterilising products by Tommee Tippee which claim to provide the same protection as the leading brands, but without using alcohol or bleach.
The Closer to Nature range contains a new, UK-made ingredient called Byotrol which can kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and comprises a steri-fluid, surface spray, hand serum and teat, soother and teether wipes. We were sent the steri-fluid and soother wipes to try.
As our baby is a bit older now, we do not sterilise as much equipment as we did when he was younger, but we still do some things like dummies. He normally won’t go near dummies that have been cold water treated, but he was happy to take a dummy after using the Closer to Nature fluid, I assume because there was no smell or bleachy taste as with some of the other leading brands.
While I was pleased with the performance of the steri-fluid, the real star performer was the soother wipes. I have to explain that our baby is a dummy thrower – at random intervals the dummy will be lobbed some distance and invariably land on the floor. Fine at home where there are dozens of the things, but the bane of my life while out and about. The soother wipes were really handy as you just wipe the dummy, let it air dry and it’s ready to be used, so no more running out of dummies when you really need them. Hooray! At £1.99 for a pack of 30 wipes this is a small price to pay for such a handy item.
Although all the literature about this range of products claims that it kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, there is really no way to test that in the home, so you just have to take it at face value really, but I’m reassured that Tommee Tippee know their stuff. They are experts in the baby feeding market (I use a lot of their equipment) and are the only company so far in that field to produce these types of products, which we are happy to recommend.
The Closer to Nature range is available from Tesco, Asda and Toys R Us with the various products retailing from £1.99 to £2.99.
