Great theme this week from Metal Mummy and it’s one of my favourites, with so many to choose from. I really like detective novels as well, so I’m going to do a small cheat this week (like that’s any different to any other week…).
My choice this week is:
Ok, so this has got to be THE MOST patronising movie poster I can think of and the movie itself was not really that great – so why choose it for this week? Well the series of books that the movie is based on is just brilliant and, while it would make a great movie, it was a little hard done by here.
Don’t get me wrong – if you’ve not read the VI Warshawski novels by Sara Paretsky, then this is an enjoyable-enough detective story featuring Kathleen Turner as VI, a female private detective in Chicago. She becomes briefly romantically involved with an ex-hockey player who winds up murdered and VI ‘inherits’ his teenage daughter while trying to solve his murder.
Turner plays VI as I imagined her, a sassy, independent lady who loves her work, despite the trouble it gets her into and the supporting characters are all played well enough, but no big names really feature.
I’d love to see a real, well adapted version of one of the VI books but since there are no plans to adapt any of the original books, sadly, it looks like this will have to do.
