As I sit here on this dark, rainy, windy day, I’m quite keen for spring to arrive. Although not the most enthusiastic gardener, I do like to poke about, tidy up and I also have lofty ambitions for the garden when the budget allows. I hadn’t until recently considered any kinds of tropical plants for our garden, thinking that they would be unsuitable in our cold winter, but having read more about the Tropicanna plant, which is not only lush and colourful, but also very reasonable to buy (at around £5.99 for a starter plant) it seems that with careful pruning they can actually survive the winter quite happily and brighten your garden the following year.
The Tropicanna plants are available from Tesselaar International, a leading worldwide supplier of reasonably priced, minimum fuss plants in the Tropicanna canna, Tropicanna Gold and now Tropicanna Black varieties, each of which can be planted either in the ground or in pots and grow over a metre in height once fully established. Native to the Southern USA and Northern Argentina, these colourful and lush plants are very easy to manage – once planted they will pretty much tend to themselves until the first frost when you can just lop them off at ground level and leave them over the winter to bloom again in May.
To celebrate the release of the Tropicanna Black Canna, I’ve been given two Limited Edition watches to give away to two lucky winners. As you can see from the picture, they are fob watches, featuring all three of the Tropicanna canna plants. To enter, simply visit the Tesselaar International website and answer the following question:
This competition has now closed. The answer to the question is: The Tropicanna Canna will grow up to four feet tall in its first year.
The winners are Daniel Coles and Alasdair MacInnes and they have been notified. Thank you to all those who entered.
Q: What height will the Tropicanna cannas reach in their first year?
Answer in the comments below, leaving me a way to contact you and for a sneaky second entry, tweet the following:
“I’ve entered to win a watch with Tesselaar International and @svmitche: http://bit.ly/x3BqM8” and comment to tell me you’ve done so.
Important Notes: The competition will end at 10pm on Wednesday 11th January and a winner will be selected at random and notified the next day. If I have not heard from the winner by Friday 13th January, then I will select another. Watches will be dispatched direct from the PR company. UK entrants only please. Good luck!
