Very often, solo albums from musical theatre stars should be labelled ‘approach with caution’ as it can be tricky to strike the balance between what they are known for and what they actually would like to branch out into. Thankfully, this album by everyone’s favourite Phantom, Ramin Karimloo does seem to strike that balance.
For those who don’t know him, Ramin Karimloo is an Iranian-born Canadian and in 2010 he originated the leading role in Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. He has also featured in Les Miserables, playing Enjolras in the 25th Anniversary Concert, and been in the casts of Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera and The Pirates of Penzance. In 2011, Ramin starred as the Phantom in the 25th Anniversary concert of Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall, receiving great critical acclaim.
Ramin, which is released on 5th March of course features Music of the Night, a song which will be familiar to Ramin’s legion of fans but other than track 11, a version of Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It For You) I’d certainly not heard any of the other tracks before although some of the other tracks are also covers, including Muse’s Guiding Light. Ramin has also co-written four tracks for the album.
Despite there being a combination of musical theatre and more mainstream tracks, there’s no obvious disparity between then – they have obviously all been carefully chosen and carefully produced to create a coherent story through the album. Despite this care and attention, the tracks never sound over-produced and with Ramin’s beautiful voice really sound wonderful.
If I was forced to choose some favourite tracks, I’d say Constant Angel and Show Me Light are real highlights, but it’s like asking you to choose your favourite flower – they’re all, ultimately, beautiful!
