Look at them. Bask in their greatness. This is the greatest football team, like, ever, and tomorrow they will face arch rivals Everton in the FA Cup Semi-final in which they shall be VICTORIOUS!
But, aside from them playing, winning and being generally awesome, there will be another, deeper reason for remembering Liverpool FC this weekend as Sunday will mark the 23rd Anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died and over 700 were injured. I won’t explain what happened as there are many, many accounts online, for example here.
Right now, there is a lot of talk about Hillsborough, as there have been a number of petitions and calls for the Government to release all the documents related to the disaster to a new inquiry with full disclosure and I read only yesterday a piece in the Telegraph calling into question the conduct of South Yorkshire Police and a potential cover up on their part. And of course on 15th April there will be a memorial service in Liverpool, as has happened every year since the tragedy.
If you’re interested in reading more about Hillsborough and those families affected by it, then the Hillsborough Families Support Group have an excellent website.
Tomorrow will be a poignant occasion, as many Everton fans also lost loved ones and people they knew in the tragedy. I think a Liverpool win would be a fitting tribute to their dedicated fans who will always be remembered.
